Resilience was the topic of our Event & Dialogue, which we hosted at our Nuremberg office in April 2023. Together with our cooperation partner stg Die MitarbeiterBerater, we looked at resilience from various angles with our guests.
The resilient employee, the resilient organisation, the resilient company: a triad that encourages approaches to resilience management and makes it very clear that all these aspects belong together in equal measure and can only produce the desired results in combination.
One central insight of the evening was that active resilience management does not exist in mid sized companies. That does not mean that strengthening the resilience of employees, the organisation and the business plays no role. Quite the opposite: it is only the term resilience management that does not exist. These activities are instead contained within the classic company functions, and there is no deliberate bringing together of them into a coordinated resilience management. One participant put it like this: of course, if you look at it that way, we do manage resilience.
Transparency, clear processes, a culture around mistakes and appreciation are important factors for employee resilience and for goal oriented collaboration within the company. Creating that framework is the responsibility of company leadership and managers. In many mid sized companies the owners work on this by giving their business values through guiding principles and anchoring them within the organisation. Those responsible for HR, meanwhile, work increasingly with competence and strength based approaches to people development and to the allocation of tasks and responsibilities. Transparency and clarity are a task for the entire management, to which the commercial area and risk management make important contributions.
What is also decisive, though, is every individual employee's own responsibility to be resilient. Self determination means dealing with yourself responsibly. Appreciation should go in both directions, however. It is not only employees who want to be valued, but managers and entrepreneurs too. Values have to be lived by everyone if they are to form a stable foundation in the company. Mindfulness in dealing with yourself, with others and with the organisation is a task for all, one that can take effect within a resilience aware framework, so that companies and employees can be robust and adaptable and can draw enough energy from change to seize its opportunities actively.
